10 days in the world’s biggest city, Shanghai

We met a completely different face of China in the 25mio people large metropolis, Shanghai. The city oozes of international trade and the ever-expanding Chinese economy. A quarter of all of China’s exports is transported from Shanghai alone and it is home to the world’s largest deep-water container harbor. In the early 1900s Shanghai was home to western tradesmen, controlling half of the city and their impact can still be seen in its French quarters and several grand brick buildings.
We spent 10 days in Shanghai and enjoyed walking among the skyscrapers in what we perceived as a progressive Chinese city at the Huangpu River. Famous for its skyline, “the bund”, we felt that Shanghai had even more to offer in its diverse neighborhoods. One of the last days, we made our way out of the city to the ancient water town, Zhujiajiao, which was established around 1700 years ago. In the water town we met two German tourists which we spent a lovely day and evening with. Together we managed to escape the tourist crowds and explored the quiet canals.

A beautiful park we stumbled upon in the French Concessions

Our favorite place to eat any meal (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner) located just outside our hostel in Shanghai. It is a hot-pot concept where you pick all the ingredients yourself which the restaurant cooks together for you in a lovely clear soup
