The road to Mandalay

We flew from Bangkok to Myanmar (Burma) on the 10th of November 2016. Myanmar is a great mixture of dusty roads, chaotic traffic, monks in Burgundy colored robes, stunning dense jungle scenery, thousands of temples and a generous and friendly people. We started our journey in the Burmese culture capital, Mandalay, also known as the center of the Buddhist universe in Myanmar. We spent 3 days in the city, walking from one end to another. Mandalay felt as a time travel back in time with its dusty dirt roads, worn down buildings and general city chaos: a clear sign that the rest of our travels in Myanmar would be a great adventure off the beaten tourist track.

We walked across the city from our hotel to Mandalay hill. The hill is a major pilgrimage site for Burmese Buddhists. On the left is the Mandalay palace, home to the last monarch in mid 19th century.

Our walkway along the walls and moats of the Mandalay Palace. The only sidewalk in Mandalay.
