and our travel diary

Five days in the lush green melting pot, Singapore

We flew to Singapore from Thailand shortly before Christmas 2016. Singapore is a wonderful cultural melting pot with ingredients representing some of the best of Asia which has a fortunate side effect of amazing street food. At the same time, the city is breathing fresh air with large green lungs in the form of futuristic city parks and vertical gardens hanging from the skyscrapers. Singapore is refreshingly clean and organized with drinkable tap water and limited traffic. We spent 5 days in Singapore and loved every minute of it!

Gardens by the Bay was built as part of the Singapore's plan to transform itself from a "Garden City" to a "City in a Garden". 2 mio. trees have been planted in Singapore over the past 45 years.

Super Tree grove in the Gardens by the Bay with 50m tall metal trees with unique and exotic ferns, vines, orchids and also a vast collection of bromeliads growing along their metal structures.

Marina Bay Sands: a casino, resort, art museum and concert venue among others. At its top is a Skypark with a 150m long infinity pool. The flower shaped structure to the right is the ArtScience Museum

A tree in the exceptional , venerable and 156 years-old Singapore Botanic Gardens: the only tropical garden on Unesco World Heritage site list. One of the highlights of Singapore!

Since we visited shortly before Christmas, the Singapore Botanic Gardens was of course decorated with gleaming Christmas balls and ribbons...

Santa, Dasher, Dancer .. Comid, Cupid, Donner and Blitzen along with a few garden gnomes...

...giant candy canes and Poinsettia flowers...

...and dancing Santa's helpers who invited us to their Christmas picnic party

Singapore Botanic Gardens encompasses 10.000 species over an 82 hectares area. The admission is free.

Singapore is famous for its fantastic street food which we had for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Among the most famous street food hawkers is Hawker Chan who was even awarded a Michelin star in 2016. A meal costs around $2 and we lined up to see what the fuss was about. The chicken was some of the best we have had, but thinking of what other restaurants and chefs go through to earn just one star, we get a feeling that this is more of a publicity stunt. However, we did fall completely in love with the hawker centers and Singapore street food in general.

Our favourite hawker center just a stone's throw from where we stayed in Singapore. Spot the tall Dane among the locals.

The stunning Singapore Concert Hall

SIngapore's skyline and the personification of the city: the Merlion with a Lion's head and the body of a fish

The historical Boat Quay and its many riverfront restaurants

The famous 5-star Fullerton hotel

The perfect bench to rest on

Even Singapore airport has its own gardens such as the Sunflower garden.

On our way back to Thailand, we could see an endless number of ships waiting to visit the world's second busies port.
Thanks for tuning in!
