A Thailand clad in black and white

We arrived in hot and humid Bangkok after a month in China. King Bhumibol Adulyadej had recently passed away and the entire country was in a state of mourning. The entire population wore black and white clothing and every major building was clad in flowers and large black and white silk fabrics and large pictures of their former king. Despite this, Bangkok was still a buzzing and fun city to visit with all its thai street food stalls, the street merchants and the endless number of Tuc Tucs. We spent most of the time in touristy Khao San road, described in the famous book “The Beach”, as ”the centre of the backpacking universe”, but we also ventured off on long walks across the city center to explore exiting backstreets and the many Bangkok neighborhoods.
We usually go by public transport from airports to the cities we visit and often find that the transport is an experience in itself. Bangkok was no exception and we jumped on a bus heading for the city center and Khao San Road. This time we only reached half-way before an alarm in the bus went off due to an overheated motor. We ended up on a bus stop somewhere in the outskirts of the city where we changed to a public bus in 1950s style with wooden floors.

Most of the tourist attractions in Bangkok are reachable by a cheap public boat which also is a refreshing mode of transport in a hot city.

Buddhas at the temple Wat Pho

Buddha images in the cloister of Wat Pho

Wat Pho is most known for its giant reclining Buddha, but we loved the rest of the temple. It had just rained and
we had the cloister and temple almost completely to ourselves

The temple has the largest collection of buddha images in Thailand
